Krish Puri
Krish Puri is a sophomore at Rice University double majoring in Finance and Economics. He is the Training Program Director for the Rice Undergraduate Real Estate Society and Sector Director for the Rice Undergraduate Investment Fund, and intends to pursue a career in commercial real estate asset management, development, or capital markets post graduation. Krish’s true interest lies at the intersection of these three real estate fields and affordable housing. He says, “One of the biggest problems facing our country is the lack of affordable housing for a larger portion of our population.”
This is empowering his dream by learning from studying finance and economics to be able to truly understand the inner workings and macro trends shaping the housing market, mortgage market, and real estate companies, and so Krish can create his own company that utilizes public-private partnerships to increase the number of affordable housing developments in the United States.
From a young age Krish has always been fascinated with business. He recounts growing up watching Shark Tank with is dad every night, intrigued by the innovation and creativity of the products. Krish states, “As I've grown older, I've learned that the key to any business, whether public or private, is the successful management of its finances. However, what good is understanding the numbers and inner workings of a single company if one can't understand the broader forces and perspectives shaping the market.”
That combination is what has led Krish to pursue a double major in Finance and Economics. He believes that pairing finance and economics together gives him the most comprehensive education to prepare for a career where I can navigate all aspects of the business world. Krish states that, “The most important thing I've learned in my life is the value of taking calculated risks. I've naturally always been very risk averse, as the thought of failure used to hold me back. However, as an aspiring businessman, I've learned from talking with experienced professionals that the one thing all successful people have in common is they took calculated risks. If no one in business ever took risks or stepped into the unknown, there would be no breakthroughs and revolutionary new ideas.”
Embracing this mindset has helped Krish grow because he believes that in pushing outside of his comfort zone, it allows him to pursue opportunities and take on responsibilities he would've been too worried about failing at in the past. His favorite quote comes from Wayne Gretzky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don't take”
